About this spot
El Morro, the 16th century fortress at the tip of Old San Juan, overlooks the entrance to San Juan Bay. From the great lawn in front of it and the walls along the water, the sun sets over the Atlantic and the bay mouth, and the stone walls and grass turn orange. Locals fly kites and picnic on the lawn in the late afternoon, and vendors sell kites and piraguas. The fort itself is run by the National Park Service and closes at 6 p.m., so from spring to autumn the sunset is on the lawn, while in winter you can still be on the walls as the sun goes down.
